Theorycrafting

So, more an invitation to discussion and theorizing than an actual blog post this time. Over the last few weeks, it seems that everyone and their dog has been throwing around some combination of Grey Knights and Necrons as the new thing to beat in competitive play. My question is, why?

Either codex could make a case for the "strongest" on the market right now, but their strengths are fairly similar: decent long range options, brutal mid-range shooting, excellent assault units, general durability, and abundance of useful vehicle hulls. Neither codex really has anything the other can't already do, and their synergy is limited by the Ally table and the redundancy necessary to take allies in the first place.

Am I missing something?

  1. I completely agree with you in terms of the Necrons/GK having very similar benefits which lend themselves to working well. As a GK player, (for what limited amount of time I can call myself that :P) there would be three reasons I would take Necron allies.
    1. An easy and brutally effective way to take out AV 13-14 due to Gauss. S8 and S7 rending does do the trick most of the time, but Necrons are just far better at it.
    2. Solar Pulses would still work for the GK right? If so, shrouding + solar pulse would be a nasty combo, if it is legal.
    3. Cheaper scoring units that are a bit more durable and don't require an SC. Henchmen are an obvious choice if you are going pure GK, but imo Necron Warriors or Immortals would be a perfectly fine replacement.

NOVA may give some insight into this combination.

  2. Pretty sure the Solar Pulse still works, but even if it does, that's still the cost of an HQ, Troops, and Destruction Cryptek. The advantage is there, but it hardly seems worth the cost.

The same with massing Gauss or Tesla - you could have similar antipersonnel/antitank fire from Strike Squads and their Psycannons.

They're certainly not bad choices, but I just don't see the net gain.

  3. As a Necron player, I can't really think of a knee-jerk incentive to take GK either way. Both armies are good at what they do, but on the other hand, Necrons don't have any glaring weakness that GK would assist with.

It's not so much that there's a why not - it's more that there's no why.
